| Introduction to the Memory Clinic What is the Memory Clinic? About Your Neuropsychological Examination Download Our Assesment Forms |
What is the Memory Disorder Clinic? The Sarasota Memorial Hospital Memory Disorder Clinic is designated by the State of Florida as one of 15 Alzheimer's Disease Initiative (ADI) memory clinics across the state of Florida. A multi-disciplinary team, including a geriatrician, neurologist, and neuropsychologist provides expert diagnostic services, as well as support and education for caregivers. The clinic also provides ongoing community education in the form of lectures, seminars, support groups and free memory screenings, and participates in research to find a treatment and cure for dementing illnesses. Who can the clinic help? The Sarasota Memorial Hospital Memory Disorder Clinic provides diagnostic services for those with early, middle and late stages of cognitive (thinking) problems. Approximately 70% of the patients seen at the Memory Disorder Clinic do not have dementia. Patients, families and physicians refer to the clinic for a full evaluation of memory loss, or to confirm a previous diagnosis. The evaluation can identify the cause of memory problems and provide recommendations for treatment and care. A final written report is provided for each patients including the medical diagnosis, treatment options, and referral information on community resources available to assist. Patients do not need to be referred by a physician. What does the Memory Disorder Clinic entail? The initial examination is designed to be simple or complex, as the person's problem requires. Before the first appointment, background information is collected from patient and family regarding health history, current medications, and symptoms. Once at the clinic, basic cognitive screening tests are completed and a Memory Disorder Clinic physician performs a physical exam. A discussion with the patient and family determines which tests are needed to provide an accurate diagnosis. Memory Disorder Clinic staff assist the family in scheduling any tests ordered. Upon completion of the testing, the full clinical team, including Neurologists, Geriatrician, Neuropsychologist and staff familiar with local resources meets to review all information, determine a diagnosis, and recommend treatment. What happens when the evaluation process is completed?
The Memory Disorder Clinic clinical team produces a written report detailing the evaluation and outcome. A meeting is scheduled with the patient family so that a Memory Disorder Clinic physician and clinic coordinator can explain the diagnosis and recommendations. Out of town family can often be included in this meeting by telephone conference.
What does the evaluation cost? The Sarasota Memorial Hospital Memory Disorder Clinic does accept Medicare assignment. After you have met your deductible, you would be responsible for 20% of the allowable charge, or approximately $30 for the initial visit. If laboratory test (bloodwork), radiological studies (pictures of the brain), neuropsychological, or other consultations are recommended, that provider will bill these services separately. If Medicare is not the primary insurance, it is recommended that you contact your insurance provider in advance to verify coverage.
